KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party ( SUPP) will field six new faces in the upcoming general election.

Its president Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian stated this yesterday when prompted on the possibility of the party fielding new faces for the general election.

“In the seven seats contested ( previously), we lost six, so (there will be) definitely six new faces while Serian will be retained ( by current incumbent Minister of Human Resources Datuk Seri Richard Riot),” he said, while affirming that ‘old faces’ will not be renominated to stand this time.

Dr Sim, who is Minister of Local Government and Housing, was met at a Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration at Padawan district police headquarters in Siburan here.

As to whether the potential candidates have been identified, he said SUPP wants the ‘ best- of- the- best’ candidates even though there was

already a shortlist of initial candidates.

“So all of you can still submit your CV ( curriculum vitae). Of course we want the best candidates and we will give more opportunities to young blood.

“I’ve always said that if you have the ability and capability, and ( are) confident you are a winnable candidate, we welcome you to join SUPP,” he added.

However, Dr Sim emphasised that the final decision regarding the party’s candidates for the general election is in the hands of the top Barisan Nasional ( BN) leadership.

On whether SUPP’s current state assemblymen (ADUNs) will be considered to stand for parliament, Dr Sim said it was unlikely for any of the party’s ADUNs to be nominated, including himself because “my blood pressure is high enough already”.

“We know there are many capable individuals out there, both men and women, and we strongly hope they will come forward if they want to serve the people.

“There is still time,” he said, adding that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has yet to announce the date for the general election.

SUPP, he assured, has been working hard to face the general election since the last state election.

At the Aidiladha gathering, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Amer Awal presented packets of meat to police personnel and other recipients.
