‘Sukaneka Bikuab’ returns after 25-year absence
KUCHING: Kampung Quop held its ‘Sukaneka Bikuab’ yesterday for the first time since 1992.
Fun- filled events and shows began early in the morning and continued until midnight.
There were over 10 stalls selling food and handicrafts, while an exhibition booth featured a mobile e-waste campaign.
The 1Malaysia Internet Centre also ran a booth to raise awareness of information communication technology.
“This year’s event looks like it is going to be our best ever festival. There is so much variety that we are confident that people of all ages will enjoy it,” said village headman Maxwell Juel.
“It feels really great to bring fun back to the village after more than 20 years of absence. Children had the greatest fun and they enjoyed the sports, games the best.”
He said Assistant Minister of Native Land Development Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn and Stakan assemblyman Dato Sri Mohammad Ali Mahmud supported and sponsored the festival.
“While the digital age brings a lot of benefits to the people, we have noticed children nowadays spend too much time on their smartphones and they lack involvement in social activities such as sports or games.
“This festival is a good opportunity to expose sports activities to the younger generation,” said Maxwell.
He pointed out that the field where the festival was held was last used for football in 2006 and remained unused until it was cleared recently.
“We are really looking forward to holding another one next year, because I feel that it is good we can meet up more frequently to strengthen our bonds,” he said.
He added the field requires a proper drainage system to remain in good condition and hoped the relevant authorities could help with this.
Kampung Quop has a population of some 4,000.
