SSC chief pays tribute to Sarawak Sports Award nominees

KUCHING: Sarawak are on the track to achieving its status as sports powerhouse of the nation soon through the vision of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports.

This is evident from the achievemen­ts of its sports people including the physically and mentally challenged athletes who had done the state and nation proud in both local and internatio­nal competitio­ns.

In congratula­ting the sports associatio­ns, athletes and sports of f icials nominated for the Sarawak Sports Awards 20152016, Sarawak Sports Corporatio­n ( SSC) chief executive officer Dr Ong Kong Swee paid tribute to their efforts in raising the level of sports in Sarawak.

He said the achievemen­ts of the Sarawak athletes nominated for the awards were of very high standard which has become the benchmark for the Sarawak sports people, coaches and officials to emulate and strive to achieve.

“The achievemen­ts of the winners of the awards have reached very high standard which is something in which the local sports fraternity should be very proud of.

“This goes to show that the ministry’s aim and vision for Sarawak to achieve the sports powerhouse of the nation is in good hands.

“I would like to congratula­te all the sports people, coaches and associatio­ns nominated for the awards and not forgetting also the Paralympic athletes.

“We also include the coaches, sports leaders and associatio­ns which are very important to the developmen­t of sports in the State.

“This awards presentati­on is organised to honour and recognise the individual sports people and clubs who are very deserving for their achievemen­ts,” said Ong who is also the director of MSNS.

The Sarawak Sports Awards 2015- 2016 is organised by the State government through the Sarawak State Sports Council ( MSNS) to reward and recognise athletes, officials and associatio­ns for their achievemen­ts in sports in the years 2015 and 2016.

Among the top athletes nominated for awards a re national diving sensation Pandelela Rinong Pamg who won the silver medal at the Rio Olympics in 2016, SEA Games star swimmer Welson Sim Wee Sheng, young athletics star Grace Wong Xiu Mei, wushu gold medallists Loh Jack Chang and Diana Bong Siong Lin and top Sarawak sprinter Jonathan Nyepa.
