Culinary arts can open doors globally for youths — Rayong
KUCHING: Young Sarawakians are urged to consider taking up culinary arts and train to become chefs, a profession that is in demand globally.
This call came from Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnichal Rayong Ngipa, who observed that successful chefs could be employed across the world.
“Chef is a profession in today’s world. Many restaurants and hotels are in need of skilled chefs.
“It’s a good move for young Sarawakians to take up culinary arts because everybody needs to eat.
“Equip yourself with the necessary culinary skills and you may become an excellent chef,” he said when launching the fourth edition of Sarawak United National Youths Organisation ( Saberkas) Batu Lintang branch’s Cooking Competition 2017 at Dewan Masyarakat here yesterday.
Rayong, who is Saberkas exco-member and United People’s Party ( UPP) Youth chief, said restaurants and hotels with good chefs had the tendency to attract more customers.
“This goes to show how important it is to have an excellent chef who can prepare delicious food for customers.”
Rayong said there are even stall operators who offer tastier food compared to hotels and restaurants, adding that he himself would choose to have meals at food stalls along the roadside even when staying at a hotel.
“It doesn’t matter whether it is a stall, restaurant or hotel; the most important thing is the food.
“If you can come up with a unique food product and commercialise it, you will be looking at a much bigger market than just Kuching since our Chief Minister is embarking upon digital economy,” he said.
Rayong also pledged a RM5,000 government grant for Saberkas Batu Lintang branch to carry out more activities for the community.
Among those present were political secretary to the chief minister Tan Kai, who is also SUPP Youth chief, and organising chairman Kapitan Patrick Tan.
