Thanksgiving ceremony to welcome new headman
MARUDI: A thanksgiving ceremony was recently held to celebrate 60-year- old Jacob Kuleh Lenjau’s appointment by the government as headman of 30- door Long Selatong Lepo Dikan in Upper Baram, about six-hours’ drive from Miri.
Last April, Jacob received his appointment letter from then Miri Resident Antonio Kathi Galis.
During the ceremony graced by Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau at Long Selatong Lepo Dikan, San Region Kenyah community leader Penghulu Anthony Kule Lalo offered his congratulations to Jacob.
Anthony advised the new chief to carry out his duties in cooperation with other leaders and listen to his longhouse residents’ ideas.
“It does not mean that once you are appointed leader, you are always right,” he said.
Anthony told the longhouse residents to give their support and cooperation to Jacob and maintain the unity that has been their longhouse tradition.
He also reminded the longhouse residents to take preventive measures to ensure safety of their longhouse, especially from fires in light of recent incidences of fire razing longhouses to the ground.
His views were supported by two of his counterparts – Penghulu Ajeng Wan of Akah/ Patah Region and Penghulu Thaddeus Lenjau Kuleh Central Baram Basin.
Anthony also urged all residents of San Region to give their undivided support to Barisan Nasional candidates in the coming General Election (GE14) that could be held anytime from now.
He hoped they would give Baram incumbent Anyi Ngau their strong support by voting for him.
During the function, the of People’s Volunteer Corps ( Rela) distributed new uniforms to their new recruits for San Region. The uniforms were presented by Captain Philip Wan Kalang who is in charge of the said region.
Meanwhile, Dennis announced a Minor Rural Project ( MRP) grant of RM5,000 for a PA sound system for Long Selatong Lepo Dikan. He disclosed that a sum of RM250,000 for Women Movement House Store is under tender already.
