Minos: MPKS working on ridding plastic, polystyrene usage
It is our duty to see that the environment is protected and people’s health safeguarded. We cannot compromise or take any chance on this matter.
KUCHING: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council ( MPKS) is now working on the elimination of plastic and polystyrene usage within its jurisdiction.
Its chairman Dato Peter Minos said both plastic and polystyrene were not environment-friendly or health-friendly.
“It is our duty to see that the environment is protected and people’s health safeguarded. We cannot compromise or take any chance on this matter,” he said yesterday.
However, he urged residents to give MPKS some time to plan on how best to implement the policies.
“The same goes with indiscriminate rubbishthrowing. MPKS is now seriously considering how much to fine the culprits.
“MPKS is now embarking on greening and landscaping Kota Samarahan. We will do it stage by stage, or as and when we have the funds and the approval.”
According to Minos, the municipal council is also working with the Ministry of Local Government and Housing and its federal counterpart on the setting- up of a modern waste management plant.
The site is in hand and it will be a matter of government funding and right technology, he added.
“The usual and conventional landfill is no longer the in thing now. MPKS must think ahead of properly handling waste.
“Waste increases by the day. Making Kota Samarahan clean is our job and we need the public to help us here in throwing their waste into the bins properly and neatly at all times. Our intention is to see that Kota Samarahan is always safe, clean and green,” he stressed.
On a separate matter, Minos revealed that MPKS has revoked all 18 family entertainment permits within its jurisdiction on the advice of higher authorities.
He pointed out that the permits had been abused for illegal gambling and were the source of many social ills and problems.
“The council is also working closely with the police to eliminate drug abuse and drug peddling, as well as housebreaking among others. MPKS wants Kota Samarahan to be a nice and safe place to live and study in.”
