Long Bedian pupils told to start setting goals
MIRI: Students of the primary and secondary schools in Long Bedian are encouraged to set their goals for the future from now.
Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau advised the schoolchildren of SK K9 Long Bedian and SMK K9 Long Bedian to start visualising the kind of grown-ups who they want to become and then strive towards realising that vision.
“In nearly every pursuit in life by successful individuals, we see this (vision) to be the case.
“Our perceptions and principles guide us in achieving what we want but ultimately, your actions determine whether or not you would get there,” he spoke at the opening of the Highly Immersive Programme ( HIP) Corner in SK K9 Long Bedian recently.
The event gathered 300 schoolchildren comprising Primary 5 and 6 pupils of SK K9 Long Bedian, and Form 1, 2 and 3 students of SMK K9 Long Bedian.
Adding on, Dennis advised the children to spend some time thinking about what is important

to them and what their priorities are.
“It is not enough to wish and hope – one must act right. You are certain to miss the target if you don’t bother to draw back and fi re.
“I suggest you to read books on successful people as a good start,” he said.
Dennis also encouraged the schoolchildren to be actively involved in extracurricular activities, which could prevent them from being lured into social ills like smoking, drug abuse and alcoholism.
“You only need to spend an average of 17 years in your lifetime to plan for a comfortable life in the future. These 17 years serve as your passport to a better life – strive to attain at least a degreelevel education.
“The choice is in your hands. Appreciate all your blessings, take advantage of what you already have and also the opportunities that come your – let this positive attitude guide your actions. There will be obstacles in life, but if we remain focus, we could become somebody in the future,” he stressed.
The HIP programme was jointly conducted by the schools’ parent-teacher association ( PTA) with support from the Teacher’s Education Institute ( IPG) Sarawak.
It was aimed at raising the proficiency level in English among the students and also the teachers and at the same time, upholding the national language Bahasa Malaysia.
