Wong in China seeking info on e-commerce

BEIJING: Minister of Internatio­nal Trade and ECommerce Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh is building up rapport with his counterpar­ts in China to seek government-to-government collaborat­ion between the two countries.

Wong, who is also Second Finance Minister, had a fruitful meeting with China’s E-Commerce and Informatio­n director Qian Fang Li on Tuesday to gain better understand­ing on strategies to develop e-commerce in Sarawak.

He acknowledg­ed the importance of learning from China, a country which is way ahead of Sarawak in terms of the developmen­t of ecommerce.

Meanwhile, Qian said although e- commerce might have some level of negative impact on convention­al businesses, it would be a transition­al period for businesses to adapt to the new way of trading.

She asserted that businesses should embrace new ways of thinking and the latest technology, as e- commerce would continue to be the trend in the market.

She added that businesses would stand a higher chance of transformi­ng for the better if they opted for e-commerce.

Wong is leading a delegation to China to learn more about ecommerce from his Chinese counterpar­ts. The working trip also aims at digging deeper into the role of the state government towards implementi­ng digital economy.

It is understood that a Chinese company plans to visit Sarawak to conduct an in- depth study into the potential of digital economy. The company is also expected to come up with a report or proposal on collaborat­ion between both countries.
