150 students take part in intellectual property camp

-

MIRI: A total of 150 boarding school students from Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan are participating in the four- day national IP (intellectual property) Summer Camp Programme.

The programme aims to create a new culture that prioritises innovation and invention as well as enhances understanding of intellectual property among students and teachers.

Sibuti MP Ahmad Lai Bujang, who is an Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) member, pointed out that MyIPO offers Intellectual Property Filing Funds to students who exclusively produce innovative products.

He said the fund could be used to finance the cost of filing for intellectual property and patent agent services.

“Since the fund was launched under the IP Summer Camp Programme, 17 patent applications have been filed using this fund,” he said when launching the camp at SM Sains Miri yesterday.

Ahmad Lai called on schools to take proactive steps to file intellectual property applications with MyIPO through the fund.

“This is because if the invention has been publicly displayed, it will no longer be classified as a new product and it will also affect the eligibility to register a patent and it will be easier for third parties to make changes and register it as their rights instead,” he said.

He added students could also upload their innovations and inventions onto the MyIPO portal for youths.

“Through this portal, students can list their innovative products for commercialisation purposes and to date 60 products have been listed in this portal,” he explained.
