Parents, teachers play key role in promoting, upholding patriotism

SIBU: Both parents and teachers play a key role in instilling the seeds of patriotism in their young children.

According to Tiong Sie Kiong, who is the political secretary to Dudong assemblyman Datuk Tiong Thai King, children can easily absorb anything that they see and learn during their tender years.

“As such, it is very important for the children to be properly guided so that they will understand and uphold patriotism,” he said at a National Day event hosted by the Lanang office of Community Development Department (Kemas) at Lanang Camp near here yesterday.

Kemas Sarawak acting director Dayang Monalizawati Abang Ismail and two potential candidates from Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) for Lanang in the next parliamentary polls – Kelvin Kong and Joseph Chieng – were also present.

Adding on to his speech, Tiong said once the young ones have a good understanding of what patriotism is all about, they would continue to uphold this spirit even when they become adults. Moreover, he called upon the parents to always be aware of their children’s learning processes and development.

“In this aspect, parents should work closely with the schoolteachers. Once the parents become directly involved in their children’s education, this would help motivate their children to strive further in whatever endeavours later on and also strengthen their level of confidence.”

Sie Kiong also commended the teachers of the Kemas kindergartens for their dedication and commitment in guiding and educating their young charges.
