MIRI : Chinese associations here are urged to continuously promote their customs and traditions so that they would not be forgotten by their future generations.

According to Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin, the Chinese have many good traditions that helped shape them into who they are today.

“There are many Chinese traditions that have very positive impacts on our generation. Among them is respecting the elderly and respecting our parents.

“I would like to urge all Chinese associations to promote these positive values so that we can continue to have generations that are respectful of others,” he said.

Lee was speaking to senior citizens at a special gathering held by Miri Hopoh Association at its premises yesterday.

He also advised senior citizens not to stress themselves and to always try to stay happy, as this will have a positive impact on their health.

He said that once a person becomes a senior citizen, they should not let their hard or unhappy past linger on, because all these negativity could take a toll on their health.

“The hard time is past, now is the time for you to be happy and do things that make you happy.

“If you are always feeling happy and do not stress yourself out, even your health can be better,” he said.

The gathering is usually held by the association once every three months to celebrate members’ birthdays as well as to provide an opportunity for them to get together and mingle with one another.

Also present to celebrate the occasion with the senior folks was chairman of Miri Hopoh Association Lau Han Hui.
