New bishop hopes more Anglicans would join clergy

-

KUCHING: The new Bishop of the Anglican Church in Sarawak and Brunei, which is known as the Diocese of Kuching, hopes to be able to solve key problems faced by the Diocese.

According to Rt Rev Danald Jute, one of the problems that need urgent attention is the lack of clergymen.

“As many of you know, half a dozen of our clergymen will retire by August next year.

“We need to fi nd replacement for them as soon as possible,” he said in his sermon during a service at St Thomas’ Cathedral here yesterday.

Hence, he said as the church looks to recruit new clergymen, it is hoped that there are people out there - not just members of the church - who would step up and volunteer themselves to serve the church and its congregation.

Apart from that, Danald also wanted the Diocese to be one that could cater for the younger generation of Anglicans better.

“May the Diocese not only continue to serve the people well, but also serve our children better. Right now we are working into ways towards achieving that,” he said.

The sermon at the cathedral was Danald’s fi rst since his appointment as the 14th Bishop of the Anglican Church in Sarawak and Brunei – also the Diocese of Kuching – on Aug 13 this year.

Dean of St Thomas’ Cathedral, The Very Reverend Michael Buma was a celebrant at yesterday’s service.
