KUCHING: A businessman charged with offering a bribe of RM2,000 to a police officer pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here yesterday.

The accused, Wong Hunt Ping, 33, allegedly made the offer to Inspector Mohammad Harun of the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as an inducement for the latter to not take action against him for allegedly committing vehicle theft. Judge Nixon Kennedy Kumbong fixed Sept 29 for the pre-trial case management and Nov 13-15 for trial.

Wong is facing a charge under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009, which carries a maximum 20 years’ jail and a fine of not less than five times the value of the gratification, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.
