-

KUCHING: The sixth Merdeka Auto Carnival will be held on Sept 16 and 17 at MBKS Community Hall at Jalan Padungan.

“We welcome this kind of event to be held here. The government supports healthy activities for the youths to keep them away from getting involved in unhealthy activities,” said Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan at a press conference here yesterday.

Also present was Sarawak Auto Enthusiast Society (SAS) president Wan Asraq Arif, who said: “We started in 2011 as an auto show. Since then, we have expanded the show into a carnival at various venues like Le Park, iCom Square and this year, at MBKS in Jalan Padungan.”

Events lined up for Sept 16 are an autoshow competition, Kone Attack Gymkhana and drift displays by 13 hobby groups as well as merchants in the new wings of the indoor hall, cosplay talent competition and car limbo competition.

On the second day, there will be an autoshow competition, Merdeka convoy starting at 12 noon, model photoshoot competition, Zumba session for the public and prizegiving ceremony.

This year, there are more outdoor booth merchants compared to last year, with eight lubricant companies joining the event, as well as car detailing shops, accessory shops, tyre shops and so on.

About 500 participants will be joining the event from throughout Sarawak and also Sabah. The organiser expects to attract a crowd of 15,000 over the two- day event.

“We are looking forward to seeing all auto-enthusiasts there, not just the people who are carcrazy but also their families, to join in the fun and get together with us next weekend at MBKS,” Wan Asraq said.

Also present at the press conference was SAS patron Datuk Patrick Liew.
