Hunt on for suspects in robbery at goldsmith shop

-

Police are on the hunt for three men who fled with a gold bracelet worth about RM11,620 from a goldsmith’s shop at China Street here.

District police chief ACP Abang Ahmad Abang Julai said police received reports of suspects fleeing from the shop after committing the crime.

He added that the latest report yesterday received was from an e-hailing service driver who had transported the suspects.

“His statement has been taken to assist our investigation,” Abang Ahmad said when contacted yesterday.

It was said that the three suspects were picked up by the cab driver at an inn in Stutong and they asked to be dropped off at a hotel in town.

Later the driver dropped the trio by Jalan Main Bazaar as they had an interest to buy gold, so the driver waited for them across the road.

Only two of the three suspects returned to the car ( presumably after the robbery) – one of them holding the driver at knife-point before they were dropped off below Satok Bridge.

It was later learned that during the 2.50pm robbery on Monday, a suspect had entered the shop to enquire of the proprietor whether he provides trade-in service as he has a gold necklace which he had left at home.

The suspect put on a gold bracelet and exited the shop, claiming to make a phone call but ran to Jalan Main Bazaar instead, fleeing in a sedan car.

“The owner of the shop tried to pursue the suspect but he fled the scene,” he added.

Initial investigation revealed that the suspects who had pretended that they were interested in buying the gold bracelet were two Chinese men – one wearing a cap.

The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code.
