SBC to present talk on Santubong Peninsula formation

-

KUCHING: The Sarawak Biodiversity Centre will be organising a public talk titled ‘The Santubong Peninsula, A Geological Treasure Trove’ on how the Santubong Peninsula was formed.

The talk will be held at the 56 Hotel Kuching at 3pm on Sept 23 and is open to members of the public.

The speaker, Hans Hazebroek, will talk about the geological formation of the Santubong Peninsula over the years which has influenced the habitats in the area today.

The geology of the Santubong Peninsula will be presented in the context of the plate-tectonic history of West Sarawak, of which many unanswered questions remain.

A geologist by training, Hazebroek worked for 17 years in the petroleum industry, searching for oil and gas in Oman, Norway, Nigeria and Malaysia (Sarawak and Sabah). During his travels, he became fascinated with the tropical rainforest, in particular with Borneo’s forests.

He considers photography an invaluable tool for making the wonders of these forests more accessible to others.

He has also written books and chapters in three of Sarawak’s most referenced guidebooks — National Parks of Sarawak, A Guide to Gunung Mulu National Park, and A Guide to Bako National Park.

School and university students are encouraged to attend the talk.

Those interested in attending this talk may register by providing their names and contact details via email to constance@ sbc.org.my or by calling Constance / Nurulliza at 082-610610.

The Santubong Peninsula is suitable for a range of nature-based tours and activities that expose visitors to the mangrove forests, rivers, near shore waters and mudflats that are home to a variety of wildlife.
