Man gets heavier sentence after appeal

-

KUCHING: The High Court here yesterday sentenced a man to 12 months in prison after the appeal against his decision by the prosecutor was allowed yesterday.

Johari Nen was initially fined RM10,000, in default six months in prison for assaulting his wife.

The 32-year- old from Kampung Hilir Masjid had pleaded guilty of voluntarily causing hurt to his 24-year- old wife using a wooden stick and was convicted under Section 324 of the Penal Code.

The offences were committed near Jalan Demak traffic light here at about 4pm on Jan 25 this year. The presiding judge, Judicial Commissioner Celestina Stuel Galid ruled that the fine imposed on the accused for the first offence was not in accordance with the law and therefore set aside the decision.
