Dismay over abuse of OKU-designated parking bays

-

MIRI: A member of the public is dismayed by the disregard shown by some road users who take up parking bays designated for the disabled (OKU).

Wishing only to be identified as Cheng, he reached out to The Borneo Post to inquire what sort of action can the authorities take against those who abuse OKU parking spots.

“As far as I know, (public parking bays) are under the jurisdiction of Miri City Council.

“However, if I am wrong, I would like to know which government department is responsible,” said Cheng while showing a photo of an OKU parking spot being occupied by a vehicle not bearing an OKU sticker.

As a frequent driver, Cheng noticed that there are motorists who take advantage by parking at normally vacant OKU parking spots in an attempt to avoid having to display a parking coupon.

“Usually, an OKU parking in front of a clinic at a busy street is reserved for patients. No normal driver has the right to park at the designated parking lot for their own convenience. It is actually against the law to indiscriminately park at such a spot.

“Hence, I hope the relevant government agency can come up with an explanation on why there hasn’t been any action taken against these wrong- doers,” he said.
