No Malaysians affected in Mexico’s quake

PUTRAJAYA: No Malaysians were affected by the 8.2 Richter scale earthquake which struck off the coast of the State of Chiapas, 750 kilometres southeast of Mexico City, last Thursday.

In a statement, the Malaysian embassy in Mexico said the embassy had been in contact with all Malaysians residing in Mexico after the quake.

“They were all accounted for and in safe condition. None are living in or nearby the affected areas,” it said.

On Thursday just before midnight ( local time), an 8.2magnitude earthquake hit off Mexico’s southern coast with the epicentre 133 kilometres southwest of Pijijiapan, Chiapas and at a depth of 58km.

In the aftermath, to date 91 people have lost their lives.

There were reportedly 928 aftershock­s all over Mexico.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has declared a threeday national mourning period and instructed the federal and state agencies to assist in the relief efforts for those affected.

The Malaysian embassy is closely monitoring the situation and in contact with the local authoritie­s.

Meanwhile, the embassy also extends its condolence­s and sympathy to the government and people of Mexico over the tragedy.

“Our hearts and prayers go to the family members of the victims in their time of grief,” it said in the statement. — Bernama
