KUCHING: The Malaysian AntiCorruption Commission ( MACC) is carrying out a membership drive nationwide for its anticorruption movement known as Sahabat Gerakan Revolusi AntiRasuah (Gerah).

MACC deputy state director Zulhairy Zaidel said the target is to recruit 7,000 members in the state by Oct 1.

At present there are 5,800 Sahabat Gerah in Sarawak.

“By being a member of Sahabat Gerah, it is the hope of MACC to see members of the public reject corruption in total. Not only that, MACC hopes that through this movement, the community will dislike those who commit corruption,” he said during an event with Mara entrepreneurs, staff, and students as well as the public yesterday.

“MACC hopes that our community nationwide will regard corruption as their number one enemy.”

Zulhairy said members of the public should be MACC’s friends – their eyes and ears – in battling corruption nationwide.

He explained Sahabat Gerah will be issued membership cards, adding more than 54,000 members have been recruited nationwide.

In conjunction with MACC’s 50th anniversary on Oct 1, various programmes and activities have been planned for this month and the next.

This includes a nationwide anticorruption roadshow ‘Kejar 2017 – Kembara Jelajah Anti-Rasuah 2017’ from Sept 17- 30.

“In Sarawak, it will begin on Sept 24 in Limbang and end on Sept 28 in Kota Samarahan,” he added.

Mara state director Dr Azmi Amat Murjan said Mara would carry out the programme simultaneously nationwide to educate staff and the community on fighting corruption and abuse of power.
