-

BINTULU: Samalaju assemblyman Majang Renggi is calling for more communitybased programmes to be organised in the Suai area to improve the socio- economic status of the local community.

He said programmes such as workshops and seminars can be of great benefit to the people in the area, and urged local leaders and members of village security and development committees (JKKK) to liaise with government departments and agencies.

“Programmes related to agriculture will be good to teach local folks ways to increase their income,” he said during the flagoff of the Merdeka Convoy K1M Kampung Iran Suai in Niah near here recently.

Some 80 participants in 25 vehicles and motorcycles departed from Kampung Iran community hall to Sepupok Bazaar, before proceeding to Al- Jabar Mosque at Sepupok junction to participate in gotongroyong activities and ending the 20km drive at Kampung Iran Suai.

The convoy was organised by the 1Malaysia Community ( K1M) of Kampung Iran Suai and Miri Division Information Department in collaboration with Niah Sub- District Office and Kampung Iran Suai JKKK.

On the convoy, Majang said it would help inculcate the spirit of patriotism among the people, especially the younger generation.

He said the participation of other K1M members around Sepupok Bazaar and nearby longhouses was a sign of unity among various communities in the area.

The assemblyman later presented prizes and souvenirs to the winners of the most creative Jalur Gemilang- decorated vehicles and motorcycles, house decoration, children’s best- dressed competition, and colouring competition.

Meanwhile, Merdeka convoy organising chairman Nazarni Salleh said the annual event, held since 2006, would be organised on a much bigger scale in the future.

Among those present were Miri/ Bintulu Divisional Information Officer Aba Sam, Sub-District Information Officer Minon Jaga, Subis District councillors and local community leaders.
