MIRI: Twenty- eight teams from secondary schools in Northern Sarawak yesterday took part in a Local Content Competition organised by Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, Miri ( Pustaka Miri) in collaboration with the Education Department.

It is the most number of teams since 2008 when the annual competition for schools was fi rst held in Northern Sarawak. The entries this year came from schools around Miri City, Baram, Limbang and Lawas.

A spokesperson for the organisers said its main objective was to get students to use proper techniques of finding and gathering information to produce a comprehensive project paper or report.

“The skills of planning, collecting, recording, analysing, interpreting, synthesising, summarising and presenting information are crucial for students in higher learning,” said the spokesperson.

The participants were exposed to printed and non-printed information resources by participating in the Information Literacy Skills Programme organised by the library. It assisted participants in researching local content such as history, relics, indigenous communities, socioeconomic issues and other topics.

This year, the theme for the competition was ‘ Traditional Handicraft of the Ethnic Groups in Northern Region of Sarawak’.

The scoring criteria for the competition are research (70 per cent) and presentation of report (30 per cent).

Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting has been invited to officiate at the prize- giving ceremony this afternoon ( Sept 14).

The champion will receive RM3,000 cash while the first runner-up and second runnerup will get RM2,000 and RM1,000 respectively. Seven consolation prize winners will receive RM300 each.

There are also RM500 awards for the ‘ Best Guidance Teacher’ and ‘Best Presentation’.
