Graduates urged to go into commercial agriculture

-

KUCHING: Graduates in agriculture and business administration are urged to think of starting modern agriculture on a commercial scale and work with farmers who have idle lands.

In making the call, Assistant Minister of Entrepreneur and SME Development Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais said he was made to understand that such graduates have strong desire to apply their skills and knowledge, but do not know what to do when they could not land a job with the government or private sector.

He added there were also many young people who have attended entrepreneurial seminars and courses having indicated their interest to become commercial farmers, but did not have land or know where to get them.

“Innovative young entrepreneurs who live in the city with no farm land, but have a strong desire to become commercial farmers, should start searching for farm land to work on.

“So I wish to start the ball rolling and invite those with the skills, money and interest to start modern agriculture using fertigation method, modern cattle- rearing, goat- feedlots, and chicken-rearing to discuss your interest with us in Gedong and Simunjan,” Naroden, who is Gedong assemblyman, said, adding that those from the city were also welcomed.

Naroden, who is also Assistant Minister of E- Commerce, said this at ‘ Membara Karnival Kemerdekaan’ in Gedong recently, an event organised by National Unity and Integration Department (JPNIN), Simunjan District Office, Special Affairs Department of Samarahan Division and Kpg Gedong Neighbourhood Watch Committee.

Naroden said those interested to venture into commercial farming could always discuss with the farmers how to work together, whether on joint venture basis, rental basis or profit sharing.

“You don’t need a big land to start, but with a big heart you can start small because what is most important is that you can start something that can generate income,” he said, adding it could help local farmers to also become commercial entrepreneurs.

Simunjan assemblyman Awla Dris and state JPNIN director Dirwana Azool were also present at the function.
