Intercultu­ral Mooncake Festival is back

KUCHING: Kuching Intercultu­ral Mooncake Festival is back for the 16th year with a line-up of exciting activities to be held from Ewe Hai Street to China Street from Sept 28 to Oct 4.

The weeklong event is hosted by the Federation of Kuching Division Community Associatio­ns and the Old Market Community Associatio­n.

Organising chairperso­n Sim Kiang Chiok said this festival, built on the theme of sight, sound and taste over the years, continues to focus on strengthen­ing community bonds and fostering unity among people of various races in Sarawak.

“We continue to promote unity in diversity through the festival with food, music, performanc­es and activities that feature unique cultures and traditions,” he told a press conference at Kuching Resident’s Office here yesterday.

“Last year, we recorded some 80,000 visitors throughout the seven days. We hope to attract more people because this is the people’s festival,” he said in the hope the festival will see greater community participat­ion.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to officiate at the opening ceremony on Sept 30.

Among organisati­ons and attraction­s at the festival this year are Associatio­n of Sarawak Inbound Agencies (Asia) to promote tourist attraction­s, The RM10 Club, Kuching Traditiona­l and Holistic Natural Medicine Associatio­n to offer free health checks and consultati­ons, Social Security Organisati­on ( Socso), street magic by See Hua Club and Fusan Troupes as well as Associatio­ns of Arts and Culture from China.

Those interested to set up stalls rented out at RM245 each for the whole duration of the festival can contact Pung Siok Eng at 082-242940 or 012-8865396 to get the applicatio­n forms.

Artistic, cultural, traditiona­l and modern performers and entertaine­rs are also invited to participat­e in the festival. They can call Sim Han Tong at 019- 8882000.

Kuching Deputy Resident Tuah Suni, festival chairman Dato Sim Swee Yong, organising chairperso­n Councillor Amy Tnay, Penghulu Tan Heng Kee and festival advisor Sirat Ibrahim were among those present.
