‘Many workers still unaware of rights as Socso contributors’
MIRI: There are sti ll many workers unaware of their rights as contributors to the Social Security Organisation ( Socso).
According to Socso Miri manager Hendera Saiful, many claims are not made because of the contributors’ lack of knowledge about Socso and its schemes.
“The majority of them just pay their monthly contributions without any knowledge about ‘ Pencen Penakat’ ( Survivor’s Pension) and ‘ Pencen I lat ’ ( Invalidity Pension) – many only know the claims that they are entitled to the ‘ Employment Injury Schemes’, which relates to incidents occurring during going to and coming back from work,” he told The Borneo Post here yesterday.
‘ Pencen Penakat’ is payable to the eligible dependants of an insured Socso contributor who has died – even if the cause of death is not related to employment.
However, Hendera noted that so far, the application for ‘Pencen Penakat’ has increased with help from the media.
“In this regard, Socso wil l continue to give talks and run programmes to enlighten the public on its schemes.”
In July, 54-year- old Naemah Abdullah received the ‘ Pencen Penakat ’ 20 years af ter her husband’s death – thanks to her sister-in- law Mislia Salihi, who attended a talk conducted by Socso enforcement unit head Neili Stephen Manggang and her team at Naim Cendera Sdn Bhd’s office here on May 4 this year.
“Socso has been going to the ground to provide talks to companies or organisations and explain to them about our schemes because we want to take care of workers’ welfare and that of their dependants – this is the right of the insured person,” said Hendera.
