SMK Lopeng Tengah banking on Instagram to win Toyota Eco Youth 2017 Challenge
MIRI: SMK Lopeng Tengah is counting on Instagram to help it win the national-level Toyota Eco Youth 2017 Challenge.
At present, it is leading on that social media platform in terms of followings.
SMK Lopeng Tengah principal Ng Cheng Soo said her charges are banking on Instagram in gaining the most followers and the highest number of ‘likes’ among the total 12 secondary schools taking part in the challenge.
“I am appealing to all, especially Sarawakians, to help my students win by following them on Instagram via @tey.smklt2017. We have until Oct 9, so please help our school to win and bring glory for Sarawak,” Ng told thesundaypost.
SMK Lopeng Tengah’s hope of having the most ‘likes’ for its website content for the Toyota Eco Youth 2017 was dashed when a school in Perak beat them with 6,599 likes as at the closing date, which was last Friday.
In comparison, the Miri school only secured 4,442 Facebook likes, placing it behind their Perak rival.
Ng said a cash prize of RM1,000 awaits winner of the ‘Best Website’ category, while the grand prize for the overall champion is RM10,000.
SMK Lopeng Tengah was the champion of the Toyota Eco Youth 2013 Challenge – an annual campaign run by UMW Toyota Motor in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.
The school’s ‘Toyota Eco Rangers’ are working on two projects to reduce carbon footprints – the amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted from the burning of fossil fuels.
Using ‘BEM On The Rock Church’ as the project site, the two projects are finding ways to reduce the usage of electricity and water.
The Toyota Eco Youth Challenge, running since 2001, is a national environmental education programme that aims to raise awareness of and sensitivity to the environment and related issues among the public.
It kicked off on Feb 26 this year and will conclude this Oct 12.
The judging criteria include assessments on the project site, blog, Facebook ‘likes’, preset project presentations and exhibition booth.
