KUCHING: Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has urged fresh graduates not to be choosy while job hunting as he believes that there are ample job opportunities in the beauty industry.

“After acquiring your recognised certification, there are many job opportunities as a beautician as it is an evergreen industry. Don’t be choosy,” he said in his text of speech read by his representative Dr Chou Chii Ming at the Maison Monica Hair & Beauty Academy convocation and 45th anniversary dinner Monday night.

He said that getting their career on track is a good way to thank parents who worked hard to afford their education, while their parents can breathe a sigh of relief that they have obtained their qualification and can become independent as they set off in their career path.

At the same time, he hoped graduates would continue to learn as learning is a lifelong process which can enrich and further improve their skills as they grow in the industry.

Wong, who is also Minister of International Trade and eCommerce, lauded Maison Monica Hair and Beauty Academy’s effort in training beauticians for the past 45 years. As a sign of appreciation, he allocated RM10,000 to the management of Maison Monica Hair and Beauty Academy.

Earlier, organising chairperson Gene Thian said Maison Monica Hair and Beauty Academy had a very humble beginning when it started its first retail salon in 1971. With sheer hard work and dedication, principal Monica Then decided to incorporate the

training department in 1996 even though it had started providing training to apprentices in the early 80s.

“It was the founder’s wish for locals to be able to get practical training without leaving home, in their own hometown, in their own country,” she said.

The effects of a more globalised economy resulted in many local talented stylists and beauticians to work abroad or become employed by international firms that set up their base in every major corner in Malaysia. To facilitate the need to obtain internationally recognised certification, Maison Monica sought collaboration with City & Guilds ( UK) London to offer courses for Advanced Diploma and Diploma courses in Beauty Therapy and Hairdressing. The invaluable working relationship enables the transfer of knowhow and experience which greatly benefits the students of Maison Monica with reduced cost of training abroad, she said.

“Therefore, it is our wish that Maison Monica will continue to improve its training method and learning environment in order to groom the next generation of hairstylists, make-up artists and beauty therapists so that they will able to display high level of professionalism and expertise in this cosmetology industry,” said Thian.

She congratulated all the graduates and hoped that they continue to grow and contribute to the industry.

A total of 60 students received their scrolls at the graduation ceremony yesterday.

Maison Monica founder Monica Then and City & Guilds ( UK) London Institute representative Siva Prakash were present at the event.
