Tan Kai’s claim against Stampin MP shows ignorance — DAP man
KUCHING: The recent statement by Tan Kai that Stampin MP Julian Tan had not brought any form of development to his constituency since being elected proves the former does not understand his party’s role in the ruling government, said DAP Kuching branch publicity secretary Bernard Chin.
Chin said Tan Kai, who is a political secretary to the chief minister and also Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Youth chief, must think that the general public is ignorant of SUPP’s publicity stunts.
“For him to ask Julian Tan to bring development to Stampin, he should first ask who the ruling government is and how much has the ruling government allocated from its federal fund to Stampin constituency.
“It just shows how oblivious he ( Tan Kai) is to the role of a parliamentarian,” he said in a press statement yesterday.
Chin explained that as an opposition MP, Tan’s duty was to bring up issues affecting his constituents and to stand against any policies and legislations which are against the interest of the people.
“He scrutinises the actions of the government and government departments, he asks questions, debates and seeks to address any constituent’s concern. He speaks in support of, or in opposition to, a piece of legislation.”
Chin went on to ask Tan Kai whether SUPP had, at any point in time, raised any objection to the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Bill when it was first tabled and later implemented.
“He should ask himself, was it not BN ( Barisan Nasional), which SUPP is part of, that supported the GST implementation and collecting the GST from the people?”
Chin said since BN is the ruling government that holds legislative and executive power, Tan Kai should ask the federal BN why they had not allocated funds for the development of Stampin constituency for the past five years.
“Do not shift the blame to the opposition when BN failed as the ruling government to bring development to Stampin constituency.”
Chin said Tan Kai’s statement showed that he was either clearly ignorant or pretending to be ignorant in order to curry favour from his bosses, while continuing so- called SUPP publicity stunts by portraying that the party is championing the people’s interest when it has obviously failed as the ruling government.
“People are more interested to know what SUPP’s role in BN is, and we would be pleased if Tan Kai would kindly explain it to us.”
