MIRI: Eleven people, including two children, were made homeless when their quarters at a plantation near Miri-Bintulu road was razed to the ground on Wednesday.

Miri Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Law Poh Kiong said six members from Batu Niah Volunteer Fire Brigade ( PBS) led by Cr William Thien rushed to the scene after receiving a call at 12pm.

The volunteer fire brigade arrived at 12.14pm and attempted to contain the fire so it would not spread to nearby areas.

“The fire, believed to have broken out at 10.45am, razed the six- door temporary workers’ quarters, leaving 11 occupants homeless. The area affected was about 120x20 sq ft,” he said.

The occupants had used fire extinguishers to try contain the fire, but it continued to rage.

“The fire was finally put out by Batu Niah PBS using a freight pump and water sourced from nearby drains to douse the flames before the arrival of firefighters,” he said.

Ten firefighters, led by second senior fire officer Roslan Jam, rushed to the scene about 122km away after receiving a call at 12.38pm.

“Arriving at the scene at 2.03pm, they monitored and retrieved information from the fire victims. No casualties were reported,” he said.

The operation ended at 4.38pm.
