Pharmacist­s converge for inaugural event

KUCHING: Pharmacist­s from both government and private sectors came together to share knowledge, experience­s and practices in the state’s fi rst World Pharmacist­s Day 2017 at CityONE Megamall here yesterday.

The event was jointly organised by the State Health Department Pharmaceut­ical Services Division and Sarawak Pharmaceut­ical Society.

State Health Department ( Pharmacy) deputy director Abu Hassan Alshaari Abd Jabar said the event aimed at advocating the roles of pharmacist­s in improving health.

The World Pharmacist­s Day was mooted by the Internatio­nal Pharmaceut­ical Federation (FIP) at the 2009 Council Meeting in Istanbul, Turkey during the FIP Congress. FIP is the global federation of national associatio­ns of pharmacist­s and pharmaceut­ical scientists which

“FIP announces a different theme each year so that the associates and individual­s in the pharmaceut­ical industry can put together campaigns or local projects to showcase the good work they do in helping to improve the health of people around the world,” Abu Hassan said at the opening ceremony. This year’stheme,‘Fromresear­ch to healthcare: Your pharmacist is at your service’, reflects the many different contributi­ons the pharmacy profession can make in the healthcare system, he added.

The objectives of the World Pharmacist­s Day is to enhance the quality of health services provided for patients through safe and effective usage of therapeuti­c products.

“We want to highlight the integral role of pharmacist­s as an effective member in the medical team as well as to encourage pharmacist­s to conduct pharmaceut­ical care-related researches.”

During the one- day event, free health screenings and dental checkups, blood donation, medication counsellin­g, mental health assessment, exhibition, games and quizzes and health demonstrat­ions were held.
