‘Stubborn’ offenders to be hauled to court over unpaid compounds – SMC chairman

-

SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council ( SMC) has decided it will haul ‘stubborn’ offenders who fail or refuse to pay outstanding compounds to court, according to its chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King.

“With regards to offences such as littering and illegal parking, the council has resolved to bring those stubborn offenders who fail, refuse and neglect to pay their compounds or outstanding fees, to court.

“Clamping actions might (also) be taken in the future to educate irresponsible vehicle owners,” he said when chairing a full council meeting yesterday.

On the ‘Say NO To Plastic Bags Campaign 2.0’, Tiong said the campaign would start on Oct 1 and will see no plastic bags provided to shoppers on Mondays, Saturdays and Sundays.

According to him, all retailers will replace normal plastic bags with bio-degradable bags or paper boxes.

Members of the public are also advised to bring their own shopping bags instead of buying plastic bags.

“This campaign promotes green living and helps to protect Sibu’s natural environment. It is important to protect the environment for the town’s sustainability in order to enable Sibu to become a liveable place for generations to come.”

On the assessment rate payment for the second half of 2017, Tiong reminded the public that the deadline is Oct 31.

Payment can be made at the SMC counter at UTC Sibu, or online via Paybills Malaysia.

He added there will be no reduction or write- off of outstanding fees and surcharges as directed by the Ministry of Local Government and Housing.

On the recent collapse of a building at Laichee Lane 3, Tiong disclosed that the council has carried out a site inspection and also received the preliminary report/building assessment from the Public Works Department (JKR).

Hence, he said the owners should demolish or remove the structures, which might endanger public safety.

“I also would like to advise the occupants or tenants to vacate the buildings because they would be staying at their own risk. Thus, I wish for everyone’s cooperation in protecting everyone’s safety and health,” Tiong stressed.
