Committee to discuss dusty condition of Krokop main road on Thursday

-

MIRI: The committee headed by Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad (CMS) to address the dusty road condition that is contributing to the air pollution along the Krokop main road will have its first meeting here this coming Thursday.

Chairman of Miri City Council ( MCC) standing committee for city infrastructure Cr Abdullah Jaini disclosed this when tabling his meeting agenda during MCC’s full council meeting yesterday.

Abdullah informed that the committee was set up following the recent site inspection by MCC to Krokop Jetty at Jalan Utama Krokop.

“This committee is headed by CMS and the members who sit in the committee are from MCC, local industries like Shin Yang, Natural Resources and Environment Board ( NREB) and Department of Environment ( DOE).

“During the site visit, the council and the relevant parties came up with various ideas to address the problem effectively.”

He said among the suggestions were to tar- seal the jetty area, provide a water basin for washing vehicles before leaving the jetty area to Krokop main road and get the dust samples to determine whether the dusty condition was due to cement works.

In addition to that, he said there was a suggestion to engage residents living around the affected area for the committee to explain to them the steps it had taken to address the air pollution.

On other issues, he reminded relevant sections in MCC to place strong emphasis on the need to speed up the implementation of flood mitigation projects for the city. He noted that there was yet any progress on the flood mitigation projects that involved a total cost of RM14.9 million.

“The council has key performance index ( KPI) and I really hope that relevant sections in the council will place priority on this aspect.

“These projects are under National Key Result Areas (NKRA) which are monitored closely by the state government and headed by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.”

Touching on another issue, he said the council was aware of the heavy traffic congestion at Jalan Taman RBA.

On this concern, he pointed out that the council was now working with Land and Survey Department to have an alternative road.

“We hope the department will be able to give us green light as soon as possible in order to ease the traffic congestion in the area.”
