BINTULU: About 240 former National Service ( NS) trainees of Similajau Camp between 2010 and2016 recently attended a programme on the National Service Volunteer Brigade ( BSKN) at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Bintulu campus.

The two- day event, organised by the National Service Training Department and UPM, was officiated by Samalaju assemblyman Majang Renggi.

Majang congratulated the organisers for holding the programme, which he believed is very significant for BSKN as it gives former NS trainees the opportunity to contribute to society.

“The programme is timely as BSKN offers voluntary services with other relevant agencies to help needy communities.

Meanwhile, Mohd Nazme Mohd Nassir, representing the National Service Training Department director-general, said to- date BSKN has registered a total of 841,620 volunteers throughout the country. This, he explained, will further strengthen BSKN’s capacity to help those affected by floods, fire, and landslides, while also contributing other social services.

“The role of BSKN is to implement voluntary work in a systematic manner together with the government agencies, non- governmental organisations, and private sectors,” said Mohd Nazme.

Also present at the event were camp commandant Azahari Abd Halim, Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences dean Dr Zamri Rosli, and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Bintulu director Aminuddin Abdul Rashid.
