Welcome non-Chinese folk to our celebrations, Chinese community encouraged

SIBU: The celebration of Chinese traditions and cultures in the country should also include the non- Chinese, suggests Barisan Nasional (BN) Sibu Parliamentary Liaison Committee head Robert Lau Hui Yew.

Lau, who is also Sarawak United People’s Party ( SUPP) Bawang Assan branch chairman, said this should be the case since Malaysia is a multi-racial nation.

“This is very important because we (the Chinese) have to embrace other communities, especially in Sibu,” he spoke at the ‘ MidAutumn Festival 2017’ celebration at a restaurant here on Monday evening.

On the festival, Lau said it is the second largest event in the Chinese lunar calendar after the Chinese New Year.

“The Chinese civilisation is 5,000 years old. Our culture is all about the history and traditions – it is very different from others in that it does not have a religion,” he added.

Touching on the 14th general election (GE14), Lau called upon fellow SUPP members to work hard in getting more people to vote.

“Even after 58 years, SUPP is still relevant in Malaysian politics,” he pointed out.

The Mid-Autumn Festival 2017 here was also attended by political secretary to chief minister Michael Tiang, SUPP Dudong chairman Datuk Dr Soon Koh Teck, SUPP Pelawan chairman Clarence Ting and SUPP Nangka chairman Benson Chua.
