Long Lama Water Festival 2017 at Telang Usan till Oct 1

MIRI: The Long Lama Water Festival 2017 is back and is celebrated together with the second anniversar­y of the establishm­ent of Telang Usan district which falls on Oct 1.

The 5th edition of this water festival which starts today ( Sept 28) until Sunday, Oct 1 features more events.

According to Telang Usan assemblyma­n Dennis Ngau, various events and activities have been lined up from morning to night.

“For the very first time, we are organising more events such as pump boat, speedboat, remote control boat, longboat, Telang Usan Idol Karaoke, basketball, sepak takraw, ‘Datun Julut’ (tarian panjang) dance competitio­n, single dance competitio­n, fancy dress, colouring contest for children and veterans, slippery tree climbing match, pulling the car contest and aerobics. There are stalls selling food, handicraft­s and other items.

“I am expecting about 3,000 people to converge at Long Lama and for the first time the Ministry of Industrial & Entreprene­ur Sarawak under Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais is sponsoring tents for 70 members of Doh Kayan Telang Usan associatio­n to do business during the festival,” he told The Borneo Post after receiving a RM10,000 contributi­on from Sabah Sarawak Gas Pipeline (SSGP) Petronas here yesterday.

call to organise more activities to attract tourists and stimulate the local economy.

‘The event is not only fun but also a great way locals to socialise and get to know tourists from outside Long Lama. It is also to thank the government for establishi­ng the Telang Usan district,’he added.

Members of the public are invited to join in the festivitie­s during these four- days. ‘ The road from Miri to Long Lama is 100 per cent tarred and I urged the public to take a day trip and experience the uniqueness of Long Lama as the journey will take only about 2 hours.

‘I would also like to highlight the ‘Datun Julut’ competitio­n which is being held for the first time as we wish to make Long Lama a cultural centre as well. These activities represent and portray Telang Usan as a culturally rich place especially the Orang Ulu,’ he added.

Dennis also thanked SSGP for their contributi­on towards the event and helping the community of Telang Usan, Telang Usan district officer Baru Tai and the organising committee members.

‘ Telang Usan always has the support of SSGP and we are expecting support from Sarawak Energy Berhad ( SEB), Ministry of Urban Developmen­t and Natural Resources and also from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports,” he said.

The Long Lama Water Festival 2017 will be officiated by Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah on Sept 30 at 1pm while Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas will officiate at the 2nd anniversar­y of Telang Usan district on Oct 1 at 10am.
