SIBU: The University College of Technology Sarawak’s ( UCTS) Bachelor of Food Technology Programme conducted the Food Blitz Challenge recently, drawing 25 students from four secondary schools here.

The four schools are SMK Methodist, SMK Sacred Heart, SMK Tung Hua, and SMK Sibu Jaya.

Participants were required to work in groups and finish a series of interesting challenges and hands- on activities related to food analysis, food processing and food packaging.

This annual event was to introduce the secondary school students to the Food Technology programme at UCTS, and discover the different stages involved in producing food products.

Nur Umira from SMK Sibu Jaya was fascinated by the stories behind the process of producing food products.

“I got to learn that canned foods are not actually made by chefs, they are made to stay longerandaresafetobeconsumed”, Nur Umira commented on the hands- on activity at canning station.

She found the knowledge that she discovered and her experience during the Food Blitz Challenge enticed her curiosity to learn more about food processing and food industry.

Associate Professor Dr Mohd Zahid Abidin, the Head of Programme of Bachelor of Food Technology ( Hons), hoped that this event would bring more high school students to discover the science behind food processing techniques, business opportunities, potential careers as food technologist, and encourage them to choose food technology as their field of study in the future.

He added that this Food Blitz Challenge aimed to educate the participants with essential soft skills such as leadership, team spirit, communication and creativity in solving the unique challenges.
