Over 100,000 affected as drilling works disrupt water supply

MIRI: Over 100,000 residents in the northern part of the state experience­d water disruption yesterday after an 800mm ductile water main near the Sarawak Energy Berhad ( SEB) office at Pujut 1 here was damaged.

The affected areas were Tudan, Prima Villa, Lutong, Piasau, Krokop, Jee Foh, Taman Yakin, the entire Pujut area ( Pujut 1-10), Permyjaya, Pulau Melayu, Desa Senadin, Kuala Baram industrial area, Sungai Tujuh Customs, Immigratio­n and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex, and surroundin­g areas.

Workers from the Sewerage Department were doing soil drilling at the affected area on Tuesday noon. During the process, the workers accidently damaged the water main in the area on Tuesday. Ha Tung Ngie, regional manager for Laku Management Sdn Bhd (Northern Region)

Management Sdn Bhd (Northern Region), Ha Tung Ngie, when contacted yesterday, said the damage occurred when workers from the Sewerage Department were doing soil drilling works at the affected area.

“Workers from the Sewerage Department were doing soil drilling at the affected area on Tuesday noon. During the process, the workers accidently damaged the water main in the area on Tuesday.

“The repair work however could not be done on Tuesday afternoon as it was already peak hours. That is why we had to do it today (yesterday).”

A check at the damaged water main yesterday saw several workers busy carrying out the repair work.

Meanwhile, notice issued by Laku stated the repair work would be completed by 6pm yesterday.
