State boxers show promise for 2018 Sukma

KUCHING: Sarawak boxers had a fruitful outing at the recent Johor Mayor’s Cup boxing championsh­ip when they brought home one gold, three silver and five bronze medals.

Syafiq Hazziman Abdullah Jefri added another feather to his cap when he won the 46- 49kg title.

That victory also earned the 19year old the Best Boxer award at the championsh­ip.

The silvers were delivered by Daeloniel Mcdelon Bong ( 56kg), Mohd Azmin Alif Annuar (64kg) and Khairul Ikhwan Khan Amran ( 81kg).

Meanwhile, Mohd Alif Heiqal Jamean (52kg), Brandon Ringkai Steven (60kg), Nyambong Angau (69kg), Christyude­n Ripoh (75kg) and Mohd Zainuddin Zailani ( 91kg) won the bronze in their respective categories.

“I am satisfied with the overall performanc­e of our boxers although we did not meet the target of winning three gold medals.

“Their performanc­e is very encouragin­g especially that they were able to give the national back-up boxers stiff competitio­n,” commented Sarawak Amateur Boxing Associatio­n president Dato Rahman Lariwoo.

Ac c ord in g t o h im, the performanc­es of Syaf iq and the team were a good sign for the Sarawak cont ingent in preparatio­n for Sukma XIX in Perak next year.

“After the Johor meet, we will be sending the boxers to compete in a boxing championsh­ip in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia in early November. It will be followed by the Golden Glove Championsh­ip in Sibu from Nov 27 to Dec 3.

“Once again, I would like to thank the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Sarawak Sports Corporatio­n and the Sarawak State Sports Council for helping us to send the boxers to the Johor championsh­ip,” added Rahman.

The team was accompanie­d by team manager Muhammad Helman Morni and coaches Fred Mandagi and Wilbur Andogan.
