Agricultur­e no longer last choice profession —Shabery

SERDANG: Agricultur­e is no longer regarded as the last choice profession but one that promises huge opportunit­ies and potential, said Agricultur­e and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

He said people from various background­s, such as pilots and engineers, were engaging in agricultur­e which they felt was a field that could be a source of wealth.

People who had engaged in agricultur­e seriously had become successful high-income entreprene­urs, and some had even become millionair­es, he said at the 7th Agricultur­e Convocatio­n Ceremony of the Agricultur­e Training Institute here yesterday.

“Fruits such as the durian and pineapple are now in great demand and fetch high market prices,” he said.

A total of 1,239 graduates received their scrolls.

They included 179 who received the Malaysia Skills Diploma; 698, the Malaysia Skills Certificat­e; 314, the Malaysia Agricultur­e Certificat­e and 48, the Malaysia Veterinary Certificat­e.

Five special awards were also presented at the convocatio­n.

The Agricultur­e and Agrobased Industry Minister Special Gold Medal and the DirectorGe­neral of Agricultur­e Special Award were presented to Nurul Saadah Ayub; the Agricultur­e and Agro- based Industry Ministry Secretary- General Special Award was presented to Muhammad Faiz Zuhairi; the Director of the Agricultur­e Skills Training Special Award was presented to Mohamad Hafizuddin Ramli and the Director- General of Veterinary Service Special Award was presented to Harizal Rosli.

The convocatio­n coincided with the National Farmers, Livestock Breeders and Fishermen’s Day 2017 launched yesterday at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang. — Bernma
