LIMBANG: The people of Limbang and Lawas can look forward to a proposed memorandum of understanding ( MoU) to be sealed between Sarawak and Brunei on mutual cooperation in the agriculture sector.

Assistant Minister of Agriculture Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail said such collaboration on agriculture-based production and exports would involve the districts in the northern part of the state and the Temburong District on Brunei side.

“Barring any unforeseen hiccup, we look forward to Malaysia’s approval and the signing of the MoU in Brunei in November this year,” he spoke at the launch of the Mooncake Festival celebration by Limbang Hokkien Association here on Sunday, where Limbang MP Hasbi Habibollah, Limbang Resident Datu Maria Hasman, Land and Survey Department deputy director Awang Zamhari Awang Mahmud, and association chairman Councillor Lim Thian Chin were also present.

Back on the MoU, Dr Abdul Rahman said the agriculture products could include rice, livestock animals such as buffaloes and goats, as well as local fruits – all of which are in

high demand.

Meanwhile the assistant minister, who is Bukit Kota assemblyman, said the second soon-to-be-built Limbang Bridge would be a part of the Pan Borneo Highway project.

This, he added, would help tremendously in re-invigorating this town and the Ranggau Valley Development Area.

“We are confident that the new route under Pan Borneo Highway will open up development in areas across Limbang town and Ranggau Valley, as it will also feature Pendam Immigration Post in Limbang and Lumapas in Brunei,” he said.

Dr Abdul Rahman said this development came about following a fruitful discussion between Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and Sultan of Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, together with the Prime Minister of Brunei.

On the Mooncake Festival, Dr Abdul Rahman said such tradition should be preserved for posterity as it is a part of the district’s cultural diversity and reflects the spirit of ‘unity amidst diversity’.

“The rich cultural diversity is our strength in drawing more tourists here. Events such as this serve as platforms for us to come together, interact and foster closer ties with one another.

“Moreover, the solidarity among the people of Limbang is essential in realising our development agenda.”
