KDC praised for running own LA21 activities
KAPIT: The Kapit District Council ( KDC) is commended for initiating its own Local Agenda 21 ( LA21) and community outreach programme.
According to Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi, both programmes aim to foster closer ties between the government – through its departments and agencies such as KDC, Fire and Rescue Department, Royal Malaysis Police, Labour Department and Health Department – and the local community, especially the grassroots.
“These programmes are under the government’s National Blue Ocean Strategy ( NBOS). They include joint, smart-partnership projects using government assets – all for the benefit of the people,” he spoke at the recent launch of KDC’s fourth LA21 and its ‘ Human Capital and Environmental Development with the Community’ programme at Rumah Sekang @ Sigan Renggie in Nanga Bawai, Baleh.
It is learnt that the first LA21 was conducted at Rumah Ansie in Nanga Sepajie, Mujong in late March, the second at Uma Kelab

in Sungai Asap Resettlement Scheme in mid- May, while the third was at Rumah Melayu in Nanga Latong, Katibas in Song District late July.
Nanta, who is Kapit MP, was happy to see that the LA21 and accompanying programmes had been focusing on health and environmental awareness in the rural areas.
“It is great that KDC continues to involve the village security and development committees (JKKKs) in all its programmes.”
On development, Nanta said the government remains focused on enhancing the connectivity in the rural areas via the provision of R1- standard road network and also upgrading works on logging roads.
“We want enhanced connectivity in the rural areas so that development would reach there faster,” stressed Nanta.
Meanwhile, Kapit Walikota Philimon Nuing expressed his thanks on behalf of KDC to members of JKKK Rumah Sekang for their willingness to host the programme.
Elaborating on LA 21, Philimon disclosed that KDC had proposed for the running of the programme at six state constituencies across this division – Katibas, Bukit Goram, Pelagus, Baleh, Belaga and Murum – this year.
“So far, we have run four ( LA21) programmes. The next one is expected to be held in Bukit Goram – tentatively at Rumah Rambor Belansai in Nanga Melipis – in October, followed by another for Belaga District, at Uma Sekapan Panjang, tentatively early November.
“The dates and venues will be decided by the councillors later on,” he said.
Later, Philimon announced an allocation from KDC amounting to RM10,000 for JKKK Rumah Sekang to carry out necessary repair and upgrading works on the longhouse’s landscaping and drainage.
