KUCHING: The Sebuyau SubDistrict will come alive with a variety of activities at end of this month as it hosts the annual Sebuyau Festival 2017, scheduled to run from Oct 27 to 29.

According to Assistant Minister of Coastal Road Datuk Julaihi Narawi, who is Sebuyau assemblyman, the ‘Sebuyau Run’ will kick off on Oct 21 ahead of the main event.

The highlight of the festival would be the highly- anticipated Sebuyau Regatta, he added.

“This time around, we want to develop and promote Sebuyau town as one of the popular destinations for watersports in Sarawak.

“We have upgraded the title for the regatta’s main event, from ‘ Raja Sungai’ ( King of the River) to ‘ Raja Laut’ ( King of the Sea) – given that the race will begin at South China Sea and end at the Sebuyau Waterfront.

“The prize money has also increased – from RM3,000 to RM7,000 – for the team crowned as ‘ Raja Laut’,” he told reporters during a press conference on the festival at Wisma Sumber Alam here yesterday.

Julaihi also pointed out Sebuyau Festival as a platform to promote the sub- district, its culture, its people and its products to visitors and at the same time, to instil the spirit in each member of the various races.

“The festival will also help promote small businesses in the area, where stalls selling various products and also exhibitions will be set up.

“Other activities to be held include the old Malay dance competition, karaoke contest, a beauty pageant and live performances by local artistes.”

Julaihi expects about 20,000 visitors to come to this year’s festival, in that Sebuyau is now accessible by roads and the Batang Sadong Bridge.
