Job fair attracts over 6,000 job-seekers

SIBU: The national-level ‘ Job Fair Programme @ UTC 3.0’ at Sibu Central Market last Saturday attracted some 6,000 job- seekers.

Sarawak Labour director Jack Meredu Ko said “740 vacancies for various posts were offered by 20 employers that day. 623 job applicants gained employment as safety officers, IT executives, human resource executives, financial consultant­s, admin executives.”

The objective of the programme was to assist job seekers in Sibu, Kapit, Mukah, Selangau, Sarikei, Saratok and Bintulu to meet up with potential employers.

Besides the 20 companies, three agencies under the Ministry of Human Resources- Department of Occupation­al Safety and Health ( Dosh) - Social Security Organisati­on ( Socso) -Advanced Technology Training Centre (Adtec) as well as three Azam participan­ts also took part in the programme.

From the 740 vacancies offered, manufactur­ing formed the bulk at 382, followed by agricultur­e, forestry and fisheries (182); accommodat­ion, food and beverages service ( 70); wholesaler­s and retailers, motorcars and motorcycle­s repairing (46), constructi­on (40) and financial and insurance/ Takaful ( 20).

Jack said the department has organised 15 job fairs throughout Sarawak in 2017.

“Job Fair @ UTC 3.0 at Sibu was the 15th Job Fair. The department is planning Job Fair 2018 and we will announce the programmes soon,” he said.
