SIBU: University College of Technology Sarawak ( UCTS) won second prize in the Sibu Lantern Festival’s lantern-making contest.

It was designed by Architecture programme students Andy Lau Shan Lok, Louis Ting Kwang Liou, Claudia Nornia Laweng, Lawrence Nyambong, and Pacific Tang Kah Jung.

Supervising their one-month project were Dean Prof Dr Ar Azizah Salim, senior lecturer Wong Lin Sze, lecturer Samuel Lee, and technician Jacqueline Louis from the Architecture programme of the School of Built Environment.

“The lantern was constructed mainly from materials like plywood, timber and rattan to reflect Sarawak’s identity, while at the same time portraying UCTS as a pioneer institution emphasising on sustainability,” UCTS said in a press release.

“The monumental curve rattan structure resembles UCTS’s famous funnel support for the escalated canopy. This elegant self- supporting structure will turn into a colourful lantern at night, creating a dynamic yet sculptural effect.”

The press release said the design also incorporates motion and special lighting effects to showcase the advancements and progressive background of UCTS.

“The famous character in the Mid-Autumn Festival, the rabbit, helps to create a lively and joyful Mid-Autumn atmosphere,” added the press release.
