Sarawak off to a good start at National Wushu Championsh­ip

PENANG: Sarawak kicked off their campaign in the 26th National Wushu Championsh­ips at Tunku Abdul Rahman College ( TARC) with two gold, three silver and six bronze medals on Saturday.

The gold medals were delivered by Bong Yun En in the U19 traditiona­l taijiquan and Arifah Yong Khairul Kok in the U18 traditiona­l taijiquan.

Arifah also won the silver in the taolu taijiquan and picked up a bronze in the taolu taijijian.

Muhammad Asri Abdul Wahab could have won the gold in the taolu taijiquan if he had not executed a important movement with his back to the judges.

The other silver was won by up and coming wushu star 13-year old Stephanie Ngu Cai Ern in the taolu changquan.

The team’s performanc­e okay today but the state athletes will have to work harder. Hopefully they can win more medals for the state contingent tomorrow. Tiong Yong Hee, Team manager

Bronze medal lists were Elvic Bong Qian Zheng ( taolu changquan), Johan Wong ( U12 traditiona­l taijiquan), Mandy Lim (taolu nandao) and Landy Liew ( U18 traditiona­l taijiquan).

Meanwhile, in the tuishou competitio­n, Sarawak, who are only fielding three representa­tives, are ensured of a silver and a bronze.

Su Chung Ung made it to the men’s 90kg final while Kon Chee Kiong will be fighting for third/ fourth place in the men’s 80kg.

Although Anthony Lee Wen Ming lost two matches in the men’s 75kg category, he still have a chance of getting a medal provided he wins the last two matches in the five- contestant field today.

Team manager Tiong Yong Hee was pleased with the good start shown by his charges.

“The team’s performanc­e okay today but the state athletes will have to work harder. Hopefully they can win more medals for the state contingent tomorrow (Sunday),” he said.

Sarawak are not taking part in the sanda (free sparring) events.
