SEMATAN: The Tanjong Datu Lighthouse has been given a special postcode, 94111, in conjunction with the launch of its new facelift, themed ‘Where Borneo Begins’.

The launch saw the lighthouse being granted an accreditation from the Malaysia Book of Records. Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari said the Tanjong Datu Lighthouse sovereignty programme was a two-pronged project besides being a tourism icon.

“It also aims to strengthen the sovereignty of Sarawak and Malaysia in strategic areas where Borneo begins,” he said when officiating the Tanjong Sovereignty Programme launch and Kampung Telok Serabang Telecommunications Tower inauguration at Kampung Telok Melano here yesterday.

Also present were Sarawak Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Tanjong Datu assemblywoman Datuk Amar Jamilah Anu. Commenting on the launch of the telecommunications tower, Jailani said the latest facility was in addition to an existing tower that is owned by Sacofa.

“Another tower officially opened yesterday is a catalyst with broader coverage facilities, enabling the residents to make known the beauty of Telok Melano, which was previously seldom known, besides obtaining information to advance oneself,” he said.

Jamilah, in her speech, said the event’s launch would place Tanjong Datu in the eyes of the world.

“The world will know where Telok Melano is located and although it is quite far in the interior, it has a portal address and services on par with other rural areas,” she said.

On the telecommunications tower in Telok Serabang, she said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC)’s initiative in collaboration with Redtone Sdn Bhd would enable residents to utilise the services provided to move and interact together with the outside world.

Abdul Karim, meanwhile, said the upgraded facilities such as telecommunication facilities and Pan Borneo Highway construction would change the landscape of Telok Melano upon completion.

“From December, Sarawak will have a lot of direct flights from China. Following my talks with hundreds of tour agents there, they ensure that Sarawak will be the preferred destination of the people from that country,” he said.

He was confident Telok Melano with its beautiful beaches and fresh sea products would also be a preferred choice. — Bernama
