Discipline a must to excel in sports and life, young athletes reminded

-

MARUDI: All young athletes must always maintain their discipline – in and outside the playing fields.

Mulu assemblyman Dato Gerawat Gala highlighted this in his speech yesterday at the opening of the ‘ Sukan Gabungan Tiga Sekawan 2017’ – an inaugural sports carnival co-hosted by three schools at SK Kuala Tutoh, which is about oneand-half-hour express boat ride from here. The other co-organisers were SK Sungai Peking and SK Benawa.

“Accomplished sports personalities like Watson Nyambek and Pandelela Rinong would not have achieved success if they did not have strong discipline. With strong determination and discipline, there is no stopping for you.

“For those in team sports, uphold unity, teamwork and good sportsmanship.

“Having said this, excellence in sports should serve as a platform for you to move to the next stage. Always be ready to compete — not just on the field, but also in life,” he stressed.

On a separate matter, Gerawat said he brought along an assistant engineer from the Public Works Department (JKR) Miri to conduct a study on the possibility of constructing a 8km road linking Kampung Benawa with Kuala Tutoh, as requested by the villagers.

Another issue pointed out by the assemblyman was electricity supply to this rural area.

“It would take some time for this area to be connected with the main grid via the sub-station slated for Loagan Bunut, which has yet to be implemented.

“On the other hand, I’m thinking about the viability of solar hybrid power generation system for Kuala Tutoh – this, we need the SEB (Sarawak Energy Bhd) to run a study on its process.”

In addition, Gerawat brought good news to the residents who are adversely affected by the riverbank erosion in Kuala Tutoh.

“I now have an allocation of RM575,000 for the building of a retaining wall, spanning 100m along the banks. Our (JKR) assistant district engineer Stephen Ung is with us here today to review further measures.”

Later, Gerawat announced Minor Rural Project ( MRP) grants of RM2,500 for SK Sungai Peking, RM2,500 for SK Benawa, RM3,500 for SK Kuala Tutoh, RM3,000 to the People’s Volunteer Corps ( Rela) Unit of Kuala Tutoh and RM35,000 Kuala Tutoh village security and development committee (JKKK).
