Kedah RTD opens tender for registration of ‘KEL’ vehicle number plates

-

ALOR SETAR: The Kedah Road Transport Department (RTD) has opened tenders for vehicle number plates ‘ KEL 1 to KEL 9999’ until Oct 23.

Its director Ismasuhaimi Shariff said based on the questions from the public over the last few days, the department expects the response to be like those for the previous plate numbers ‘KEE’ and ‘KEK’.

“The Kedah RTD had the highest collection from the tenders for the number plate ‘ KEE’, amounting to RM308,000 while in 2016, ‘KEK’ collected RM189,000.

“So we expect ‘KEL 1 to KEL 9999’ to also draw good collection as there are many combinations which could become words like ‘KEL 14’ ( KELIA), ‘ KEL 413’ (KELAB), ‘KEL 154’ (KELISA) and ‘KEL 1847’ (KELIBAT).

Ismasuhaimi said there were three categories of plate numbers which had been opened for tender, namely the golden numbers of 1 to 10, with tenders beginning from RM10,000; the ‘interesting numbers’ (double digit), with tenders beginning from RM2,000; popular numbers (combined numbers) with tenders beginning from RM300, and running numbers beginning from RM210,” he told reporters at his office here yesterday.

He was confident that the response for ‘KEL’ would be encouraging and hit the RM2 million mark for tenders, compared with ‘KEE’ which collected RM1.88 million.

“The registration for the plate number ‘KEK’ is on-going and is expected to reach 9,000 by early November … after ‘KEK’, the registration for ‘KEL’ is expected to begin by mid November,” he said.

Ismasuhaimi also stressed that vehicle owners abide by the regulations governing registration numbers which should meet the required specifications.

“I want to remind road users to observe the specifications set by the RTD, and if they violate them, they will be issued summons,” he said.

He added that anyone interested to make bookings for the numbers could contact the director of Kedah RTD or visit the RTD website at http://www/jpj.gov.my. — Bernama
