Dog sniffs out thief hid­ing in water bar­rel

BAU: A Ger­man Shep­herd from the state po­lice K9 unit named Zuo Lin sniffed out a sus­pected ve­hi­cle thief hid­ing in a water tank to evade ar­rest in a jun­gle near Kam­pung Suba Buan at Jalan Bau-Lundu on Oct 11.

The K9 unit from the Crim­i­nal In­ves­ti­ga­tions Depart­ment (CID)’s state head­quar­ters was called to the site at 1pm when the sus­pect and an ac­com­plice were seen en­ter­ing the jun­gle af­ter aban­don­ing a ve­hi­cle that had pur­port­edly skid­ded from the main road.

State CID chief Dato Dev Ku­mar said it only took about half- an­hour for Zuo Lin and her han­dler Cor­po­ral Saga Giang to find the sus­pect who was hid­ing in the water bar­rel next to a hut in the jun­gle, about 100 me­tres from where the stolen ve­hi­cle was aban­doned.

The sus­pect is a 22-year- old man re­leased from cor­rec­tional in­sti­tu­tion, Seko­lah Henry Gur­ney in Sabah in May this year.

The sec­ond sus­pect es­caped af­ter his scent was lost at a river some 70 me­tres from where the first sus­pect was found but was ar­rested around 1.30pm.

The sus­pect and the stolen ve­hi­cle have been handed over to Kuching CID. Po­lice were on the look­out for the ve­hi­cle af­ter it was re­ported miss­ing in front of a cof­fee shop at Jalan Pen­ris­sen by a 44-year- old man around 9am on the same day.

End of the road for the sus­pect af­ter his hid­ing place was sniffed out by Zuo Lin.
