-

MIRI: Members of public are welcome to join the state Level 2017 White Cane Day & World Sight Day today ( Oct 14) at the ground floor of Bintang Megamall.

Director of Miri Hospital Dr Jack Wong said the event is organised by Blind and Visual Impairment ( BVI) Committee of Miri Hospital in collaboration with Sarawak Society For the Blind (SSB) Miri branch.

Dr Wong explained the White Cane Day is celebrated worldwide in the month of October to educate the public on the blindness and show the world how the blind and visually impaired can live and work independently, thus helping to reduce stigmatisation against them.

“We are hoping through this event there will be better awareness on the rights of disabled people (OKU) with visual problems and that the public will be more concerned about those who use the ‘white cane’.”

On the World Sight Day, he said the world community observed this day during the second week of the month of October each year.

“Like the White Cane Day, the objective for the World Sight Day aims to create better awareness on the blindness, visual impairment and rehabilitation in visual impairment.”

Wong added that Miri mayor has been invited to officiate at the event which will be attended by those(OKU) with visual problems from Miri, Kuching and Sibu as well as participants from Special Education School of Miri.

The programme for the day are ‘ Walk with The Blind’, bowling competition for the visually impaired, watching a movie with the visually impaired, eye screening, foot reflexology, exhibition and talk.
